On November 30th, the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) referred to the global connectivity achieved so far around the world using the Internet and mobile phones.
According to a 2022 ITU report, 73% of the world’s population aged 10 and over owns a mobile phone. In low-income countries, mobile phone ownership is higher than Internet usage.
Regarding Internet use, ITU said Internet use is now more affordable for users in all regions of the world and in all income groups than it was a year ago. However, cost remains a major barrier to internet access, especially in low-income economies, although it will decline slightly in early 2022.
By early 2022, the ITU estimates that 2.7 billion people will still not be connected to the Internet. While this figure is an improvement compared to 2021, it also shows the impact of slowing internet connections due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Additionally, 69 percent of men use the Internet. The gap is even wider in low-income countries. 75% of 15-24 year olds have access to the internet, up from 72% in 2021. Furthermore, according to ITU, there is still a gender gap in digital access. Specifically, only 63 percent of women have access to the Internet, despite making up nearly half of the world’s population.
After 25 years of internet connectivity, Vietnam now has around 70 million internet users, according to Vietnam Internet Association (VIA) estimates. Statistics from Statista show that Vietnam currently ranks 13th in the world in terms of the number of Internet users. Furthermore, in Speedtest’s ranking, Vietnam’s internet speed ranks 58th and 59th in the mobile and fixed broadband network categories, respectively.
The e-Conomy SEA 2021 report released by Google, Temasek and Bain & Company in November 2021 predicted that Vietnam’s Internet economy will become the second largest economy in Southeast Asia with a total value of 220 billion US dollars. Commodities to 2030.
According to the Vietnam Internet Association (VIA), between 2021 and 2025, the national digital transformation plan will be accelerated to 2025 with a vision of 2030. Targets of the plan include broadband network infrastructure. Fiber optic cables cover more than 80% of households, the digital economy accounts for 30% of GDP, and the digital divide is narrowing.
